THEY ARE NOT GONE IF WE REMEMBER THEM
To all those who have lost loved ones,
This morning, I woke up missing my parents deeply. In a world so often filled with “me thinking,” it’s easy to forget to take the time to remember those who gave us so much. I make it a point to honor my parents almost every day—parents who loved me, provided for me, and taught me how to be a good citizen in this world.
When people ask me why I started Late Sunday Afternoon, the true answer is all of you. I began this journey to connect with others around the world—not just to connect, but to show, through my actions, that there are good, decent people out there doing their best to treat others the way they wish to be treated.
Like most parents, mine had their own baggage—much of which, like many from their generation, they never fully worked through. When this happens, that weight often passes down to the next generation. I became aware of this in my twenties and began the heavy lifting of processing my own childhood experiences. I had to relearn new ways of understanding who I was in this world—a journey that, for many of us, lasts a lifetime.
The soul we carry within us wants to know itself more deeply. It doesn’t seek to avoid hard feelings or uncomfortable conversations. Our souls are here to explore the depths of both the inner and outer worlds. My parents gave me the space to discover who I was without placing limitations on me. Still, like many of us, they unconsciously projected their unhealed parts—whether around money, self-worth, or love.
Now, as a father, I am doing my best to heal those parts of myself so my son won’t have to spend his life decoding the patterns I left behind.
As we conclude this month, I encourage you to ask yourself:
How can I contribute more to this world?
How can I mentor those who seek guidance?
How can I support my community?
Where can I go to process my own weight?
Who can I count on to truly listen?
These questions can give purpose to your time.
Put down your phone. Pick up a book. Call a friend. Plan an adventure.
And remember—by holding those you love in your heart, you keep them alive within you.
With love,
Matthew Schildkret
