An Interesting Woman...

Tawney has been a friend of LSA since the beginning. She floats in and out of many worlds and everywhere she goes she brings a smile and positive vibes. We've loved shooting videos and photos with her this year and we're thrilled to share her story with our Tribe.

Yoga Teacher. Activist. Album Cover Model. World Traveller. Ayurvedic Healer. Muse... Are you actively auditioning for "Most Interesting Woman in the World"?

Oh boy, I come by it honestly. My grandmother, the ceramicist, singer, who had an antique business called Yankee Peddler. My mother, the stewardess, florist, photographer, playboy bunny. All the women before me lived for a new job, a new city, and a new love story. Plus, it makes filling out paperwork for a visa or a Linkedin profile more exciting, 'what am i going to say this time? nobody knows.' I'm surprised I'm not on some watchlist.

What is the Compound?

The compound is a place I wandered into 9 years ago and haven't left. The property belongs to my friends who run Zeno Mountain Farm, a nonprofit that champions lifelong friendships and opportunities for people with and without disabilities. The compound is one of the places this group gathers throughout the year so moving in came with about 60 new friends.

More recently we've started offering beds to travelers in need of a place to lay their heads. I make sure everyone's happy, the "innkeeper", just to throw another title in the mix.

What are your biggest struggles?

I struggle to remember that "done" is better than perfect.

and, like E.B. White, I struggle to plan my day....

"I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day."

What are your favorite accomplishments?

I've found all the best people in the world and they've become my family, friends, and cohorts.

What part of your personality are you most thankful for?

The observant part.

What does your favorite or ideal Late Sunday Afternoon look like?

paddling into some glassy,
cool waves on a hot day
followed by a delicious meal
and a nap in the hammock
with my person beside me
and dog below me.

What gives you hope for the future?

Artists

What excites you about being an LSA ambassador?

This isn't your typical neighborhood and we aren't your typical neighbors. I appreciate the people doing what they can to try to keep that Venice spirit alive. The folks behind LSA have loved this place for a long time. It isn't your typical business.

What are you doing next? How can people get involved?

I'm working on eliminating a type of modern-day slavery in northern India called debt bondage slavery, where entire villages lacking in education and resources are enslaved after taking a loan. Our website, Voices4Freedom.org will walk you through the issue and how education and empowerment are resulting in hundreds of people freeing themselves from slavery and becoming freedom fighters. You'll also find a bunch of brand new ways to get involved. Reach out to me through the site if you're interested. We need you.

Where are all the places people can learn more about you?

At a venice coffee shop pretending it's my office, walking my dog through the canals, swimming in the ocean, or at a show at LSA. I'm a little shy, but feel free to come say hi.
